One might think the secret for a happy and long canine life is the quality of the care given to a dog. There are some other facts that come along, especially the dog’s breed which would . One of the most heartbreaking things about owning a pet dog is, having to say good bye one day. The average lifespan of a dog is around 10-13 years. However, some breeds tend to live longer than others. Generally, it is noticed that small breeds live longer. It is because larger dogs age more quickly as they grow up faster. Here is a list of the 20 dog breeds that live the longest reaching up than their average lifespans.

We are not surprised if you haven’t heard of this breed before? Well, that’s because once thought extinct but they are alive in wild. The New Guinea singing dog or New Guinea Highland dog is an ancient lineage of dog found in the New Guinea Highlands on the island of New Guinea. They are considered world’s rarest dog and known for its singing howl. Only about 100 live in captivity. Their average lifespan is around 18 years and they are gentle and friendly with humans.

Chihuahuas are one of the longest living dog breeds and they are also one of the smallest dog breeds. They live an average of 15 to 20 years.  People believe that they live long largely because they are not prone to any serious illness. These tiny dogs require plenty of exercise due to their small body size. They are generally healthy, but this breed is still prone to heart and eye problems. The longest living Chihuahua recorded is a 20 years old Chihuahua called ‘megabyte’.

The cheerful toy poodle can make a great family pet. All poodles and poodle mix have a fairly long lifespan. Toy poodles have the longest expected lifespans among the group. A toy poodle can live 14 to 18 years under good care. Just like other poodles, toy poodles are easy to train and they are very intelligent. But the breed is prone to orthopedic problems and eye disorders.

Yorkshire Terrier or ‘Yorkie’ (nickname) is a compact, toy-size terrier of no more than seven pounds which is well-known for its longevity. Yorkies was originally called as a broken-haired Scotch terrier. They are lively, curious and attention seekers. They tend bark a lot. This makes them a potential good watchdog. An interesting thing about Yorkies is they also come in tiny size called Teacup Yorkie. The Yorkies can live for 14 to 17 years.

Cockapoos are a cross between a cocker spaniel and a poodle. They are bright-eyed and scruffy-coated. Cross-bred Cockapoo puppies could look very different even if they’re from the same littler. The Cockapoo’s size, color, coat type, temperament, activity level, and health risks will vary depending on what traits an individual puppy has inherited. This curly-haired canine has consistently long lifespan up to 18 years. They tend to have happy, affectionate personalities. They are super warm, friendly and loyal to human companions, but require extensive grooming.

The Jack Russell terrier is small breed with an average lifespan 16-20 years. They are originated from England and years later the breed was exported, developed and was given a standard written record in Australia. They are energetic and spontaneous dogs who love to spend most of the time outdoors.  According to Guinness World Records, the oldest Jack Russell was Willie, reaching age 20 in 2014.

Combining brains and beauty, this adorable Mediterranean breed is one of the most affectionate dogs. Maltese are known for being super smart, playful and good with kids which makes them an ideal family pet. The average Maltese lifespan runs 12 to 15 years. Females of this breed tend to live one year longer than their male counterparts, but all Maltese pups are expected to have long lifespans since they suffer from few serious genetic diseases. This popular breed often experiences dental problems later in life, so make sure to keep an eye on that if you’re thinking of bringing a Maltese home.

According to some experts, the breed name derives from the Gaelic word beag (“little”), while others point to the French term for the sound hounds make while hunting: be’geule. Beagles generally have a lifespan of 12 years and as per records, the oldest known Beagle lived an amazing 27 years.

Papillon is a quick, curious dog known for his refined appearance of large, wing-shaped ears which also gives the breed its name (“papillon” is French for “butterfly”). They are happy, alert, and friendly dogs. “With a personality as large as their ears, Papillons tend to be the party pup in the room,” says Demling-Riley. They are excellent agility dogs and are consistent winners at the sport’s highest levels. Papillon lives up to 16 years in average.

Beagles have starred in films and TV shows, and even they are on several ancient paintings. 11. PAPILLION

Average lifespan: 14-16 years

Papillion is the French word for butterfly. So they have got this name because of their wings like ears. These dogs are very social with children and very intelligent.  Papillion was also popular in the 1500s among the European royal family. Their life expectancy is 16 years, and indeed, small-sized dogs live longer than large-sized dogs.

12. Australian Shepherd

The Australian Shepherd, the cowboy’s herding dog of choice, is a medium-sized ranch dog, which is a European breed perfected in California by way of Australia. An Australian Shepherd could weigh up to 60 pounds. They are remarkably intelligent, work-oriented and exuberant. A healthy Australian shepherd has a life expectancy of 15 years.

13. Shih Tzu

Shih Tzu is a toy group dog that originates in Tibet. They are cute but can be aggressive sometimes. People have named them after the most beautiful woman in ancient china called Xi Shi. In some areas, Shih Tzu’s are also called the Lion dog because of their lion-shaped small head. As with other toys dogs, Shih Tzu can live 18 years.

14. Lhasa Apso – which dogs live the longest

Lhasa Apso is another toy dog from Tibet. They are known as the parental breed of Shih Tzu. Their cute long curly hair makes them more likable. Like other toy dogs, they are not playful dogs.
